Construction of Goolwa Channel Regulators - 24/07/2009
South Australia Government’s emergency drought response. The aim of the Goolwa Channel Water Level Management Project is to raise the water level in the Goolwa Channel, Finniss River and Currency Creek to prevent exposure of soils that have the potential to acidify. Existing aquatic fauna and flora will also benefit from a secure freshwater environment. This will be achieved by constructing a temporary environmental flow regulator in the Goolwa Channel at Clayton as well as temporary environmental flow regulators at Finniss River and Currency Creek.
With the Goolwa Channel regulator in place, 27.5 Giga Litres of water will be pumped into the Channel from Lake Alexandrina to raise the level of the water. This pool will also capture the expected winter/spring freshwater inflows from the tributaries.
The York team will be transporting and placing over 140,000 cubic metres (280,000+ tonnes) within a 6-week operation. 3 x 36” pump stations will be established to pump 27.5 Giga Litres within 8 weeks.
