North Quay Rail Terminal Stage 2

This project involved extending the North Quay Rail Terminal from 400m to 690m with the aim of increasing capacity to transport goods by rail, and reducing truck traffc to and from the port by improving accesses for container transfer on and off of cargo trains.

This involved 55,000m2 of heavy duty pavements adjacent to live rail, and the extension of 2.3km of rail tracks within the terminal, enabling longer trains to enter the port, and containers to be transported between the rail terminal and adjacent berths in a more economical manner.

Works also included the demolition and removal of old buildings and infrastructure, the extension of four existing rail lines, the construction of new office and maintenance facilities, plus all supporting underground services and security infrastructure.

AWA CCFE Finalist 2015 key challenge revolved around ensuring at least two rail tracks remained fully operational during all construction activities. This was achieved through collaboration and coordination with both Fremantle Ports and Intermodal Link Service ( the Port Operator ) to facilitate periods of construction works between all train movements.
